On October 10, 2025, the roundtable “Waste Management: the Experience of the EU and Ukraine” was held at the Department of Biotechnology of the Faculty of Environmental Safety, Engineering and Technologies of the State University “Kyiv Aviation Institute”. The event was organized within the framework of the implementation of Jean Monnet Module “Waste Management in the Context of the Transition to a Circular Economy: the EU Experience” (101172378 – CIRCLEMAN – ERASMUS-JMO-2024-HEI-TCH-RSCH).

The purpose of the roundtable was to familiarize participants with the European experience of waste management, analyze the current state of the waste management system in Ukraine, and discuss the possibilities of adapting EU best practices. Special attention was paid to the implementation of the principles of the circular economy and to the exchange of scientific and practical developments in the field of waste processing.

The event was attended by nearly 60 participants, including representatives of the academic community, scientific institutions, the industrial sector and local authorities. Participants from different regions of Ukraine and abroad joined the discussion, which provided a wide range of views and practical experience on waste management and the implementation of the principles of the circular economy.

The round table was moderated by Iryna Korniyenko, Associate Professor of the Department of Biotechnology of the KAI, CIRCLEMAN project team member.

The participants were welcomed by the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Safety, Engineering and Technologies KAI Valentina Groza, Head of the Department of Biotechnology (KAI) Oleksiy Boldyriev, and the coordinator of the CIRCLEMAN project, Associate Professor of the Department of Biotechnology (KAI) Olena Kuznietsova. After welcoming speeches by representatives of the Faculty and Department, the participants were addressed by Volodymyr Kremin, Director of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Kamyanske City Council, who, in addition to his welcoming speech, informed those present about the state of solving environmental issues and waste management in the region and outlined current directions of state policy in the field of environmental protection and rational use of natural resources.

The roundtable program included speeches on a wide range of topics — from waste management issues taking into account the principles of the circular economy to the possibilities of adapting European experience in Ukraine:

The discussion of the issues considered during the event confirmed that the transition to a circular economy is not only a challenge for Ukraine, but also an opportunity – an opportunity to develop a modern environmental policy and implement “green” technologies based on scientific knowledge, technological innovations and partnership with the European Union.

The event was attended by many higher education students – future specialists who are already developing the competencies necessary to implement the principles of the circular economy and effective resource management in accordance with European approaches.
